In the seventies of the last century the Department of Psychiatry got established in the Government Medical College, Srinagar and this mental health facility was converted into Government Psychiatric Diseases Hospital, an associated hospital of the Govt. Medical College, Srinagar. The hospital was selected for up-gradation under NMHP in 2009 to Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (IMHANS). Presently the Govt. Psychiatric Diseases Hospital, Srinagar has two components:
- A 100 bedded “Institute of Mental health & Neurosciences (IMHANS)” at Rainawari, Srinagar and
- A 30 bedded “Community General Hospital Unit’’ located within SMHS premises.

Facilities
- At IMHANS. OPD services (10:00 Am to 4:00 Pm) and 24×7 emergency services.
- Admissions along with attendant (Open Ward)
- Admission without attendants (chronic Wards)
- Free indoor/outdoor medication to patients
- Free basic medical investigation for in-patients.
- Clothes/ basic hygiene and personal care items and food for in-Patients.
- Maintenance of patient hygiene.
- Proper heating arrangements.
- Laundry Services.
- AB-PMJAY scheme implementation for Golden card holders.
- Psychological counselling
- Social workers for maintaining liaison between patients and their families. They also play a pivotal role in tracing unknown patient whereabouts.
- Ambulance Services for dropping patients without attendants to their homes. Ambulance services for referral to other associated hospital of GMC.
- Occupational therapist to facilitate recreation of chronic Patients.

- General Psychiatric OPD (Daily 10am-4pm)
- Weekly Specialized Child Psychiatry Clinics (Thursdays)
- 24 x 7 psychiatric emergency services
- Special emphasis on Drug De-addiction with provision of counselling and de-addictions services on OPD and IPD basis. Oral Substitution Therapy (OST) in collaboration with J&KSACS is also provided.
- IPD facilities (30 beds), separate male and female wards. Recreational hall with mini gym and indoor sports facilities (table tennis, carom, ludo, chess etc.) are available for patients.
- Availability of Occupational therapist and other supportive staff.
